Starting Up Your Device | Trezór®
Congratulations on acquiring your Trezor hardware wallet! The journey begins at Trezor.io/Start®. This official portal is your entry point for securely initializing your device, installing verified firmware, creating your recovery seed, and setting up your PIN. By following this guide, you ensure you stay protected from phishing, counterfeit software, and other threats.
Why is this important? Because once your crypto assets are under your control, security starts with the first setup. A single misstep can lead to irreversible loss.
Gather the following before beginning:
Warning: Your device should *never* arrive with a preprinted recovery seed. If it does, do not use it—it may be compromised.

Open your browser and type in https://trezor.io/start. Do not click ads or search results—you want to ensure you're on the official domain with a valid SSL certificate (look for the lock icon). Bookmark this page for future reference.
Once on the page, you'll choose your device model (e.g. Model One or Model T) and be directed to download Trezor Suite, the official app that helps you manage your wallet, firmware updates, and transactions securely.
Trezor Suite is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Download the version that matches your operating system. Follow through the installation wizard to install the application.
After installation, open Trezor Suite and connect your Trezor device using the USB cable. Trezor Suite will detect your device and guide you through the remaining setup steps.
If your Trezor device does not have firmware installed (common for freshly shipped units), Trezor Suite will prompt you to install the latest version. If you already have firmware installed, the software will check if it’s up-to-date.
When updating or installing firmware, always verify the prompt on the device itself before proceeding. The device must confirm that the firmware is genuine.
Do not interrupt the process, disconnect the device, or use unofficial firmware. Doing so may brick your device or introduce vulnerabilities.
Once firmware is verified, you’ll choose “Create new wallet.” The device will generate a recovery seed—commonly 12 or 24 words (depends on model or user choice). This seed is your ultimate backup and should be handled with extreme care.
Write each word, in exact order, on the blank recovery card. Double-check spelling. Never take a photo, screenshot, or store the seed digitally. Keep it offline and in a safe place.
Trezor Suite may ask you to confirm selected words from the seed to verify accuracy.
For additional protection, you’ll set a PIN (4–9 digits) that you must enter whenever you connect your device. Enter the PIN via the **Trezor hardware device**, not on your computer.
Avoid PINs like “1234” or repeated digits. Memorize the PIN but do not write it on the recovery sheet.
Too many incorrect PIN entries will factory reset the device—your seed is the only method to recover your wallet.
An optional passphrase acts as a 25th word on top of your recovery seed, creating a *hidden wallet*. If you choose to enable it, you’ll need both your seed and passphrase to access funds.
This is a powerful defense against coercion, but it adds complexity—if you forget the passphrase, there's no way to recover funds.
After setup, your Trezor is ready to send, receive, and manage cryptocurrencies via Trezor Suite. Common workflows:
Always verify transaction details on the device’s screen—never trust the computer alone.
If your device is lost, damaged, or replaced, you can restore your wallet using the recovery seed:
Your transaction history and balances will reappear, because all data is derived from the deterministic seed.
To maintain robust security over time, keep these in mind:
Try another USB cable or port. Restart Trezor Suite. On Linux, ensure proper udev rules. Use the latest version of Trezor Suite and drivers.
Multiple wrong PIN attempts will wipe the device. Use your recovery seed to restore.
Unfortunately, without the seed, you cannot recover your funds. Trezor (or any support) cannot help you retrieve it. Always back it up securely.
Ensure stable internet, use original cable, try another computer. If stuck, factory-reset, reinstall firmware, and restore. Contact official support if problems persist.
